To succeed in a career involving producing, recording, mixing, engineering, and mastering music, you need to know the latest technology, tools, and techniques plus the interpersonal skills required to get the best out of musicians. You’ll also need an understanding of the core music theory that serves as the underpinning for most truly great music. In this certificate program, you’ll learn all of this and develop a portfolio along the way, with our skilled tutors in a flexible learning environment.
Grades 1-3 (Level 1)
Identifying studio hardware, physical audio formats, analogue connectivity, computer & digital technology, DAW basics, microphones, MIDI basics, basic audio technology and the fundamentals
of mono & stereo sound. Sonic Fidelity – Identifying instruments in isolation and within a mix. Music Theory & Harmony – Identifying relative pitch & basic note lengths. Stylistic Awareness – Identifying specific genres.
Grades 4-5 (Level 2)
Describing equipment controls, surround formats, wireless connectivity, backing up files, plugin concepts, stereo microphone techniques, non-linear editing, software instruments, side-chaining and sound propagation. Audio Production: use of automation to fix a dynamically uneven vocal recording. Electronic Music Production: creation of an original synth patch that works with the provided drum groove.
Grades 6-8 (Level 3)
Comparing studio hardware, audio file formats, analogue vs. digital technology, microphone technique choice, vocal comping, triggered samples, balanced audio advantages and acoustic room design. Audio Production: The scenario will focus on mastering a final mix with EQ, compressors and limiters. Electronic Music Production: creating a remix using the supplied vocal samples.

RSL qualifications are delivered in over 40 countries worldwide, across 6 different continents. RSL’s Performance Arts Awards group graded exams and RSL Graded Music Exams carry UCAS points at 6, 7 & 8. RSL’s regulated qualifications are listed on the National Register of Approved Qualifications. RSL’s regulated qualifications are recognised within the EU as valid in the Bologna Process and are now part of the European Qualifications Framework. From April 2012, all RSL certificates will have the appropriate EQF level identified on them.
The lessons will take place once a week for two hours, online with live teachers.
All the materials of study will be provided and will be included in the monthly quota.
At the end of each year the student will gain a prestigious certification awarded by RSL.
